tension of strings. don’t loosen the strings. The harps are designed for proper tension based on three factors, the pitch, frequency of a specific tone, the diameter of the string and the length of the string. The harps that we recommend have been built to take these all into consideration. The harps are just a slightly lighter tension than some harps that are very tight. It is true that there is a fine line between too tight and shrill and too loose and mushy. If some one has studied harp professionally and has a firm grasp on the strings than they might want to consider a harp like the Nightingale versus if someone has a very light touch who might want to choose a less tension harp made by the same maker, called the Jessie harp. Some people deal with tendinitis and the Jessie would be perfect for them. But all of our recommended harps meet certain criteria and we can help you find the harp that is best suited for you. We can also recommend harp builders in other countries. Christina

Hi everyone! I see a few questions that I can quickly answer here for you.
OSM is short for the former Module 1 which encompasses the standards that are required by the National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians. It stands for Online Standards Module now.

ESM is short for the former Module 2 which is the Experiential Specialty Module which is unique to the International Harp Therapy Program. This module can actually be taken by PREP students without the OSM if they have studied the Creative Harping DVDs 1-6 prior to coming.

By having the numbers 1 and 2 it made it seem that they were not interchangeable so therefore the reason for OSM and ESM.

Some people have asked about the answer to #2 on the Amy Kanner Quiz – the answer is Aristotle.

I have added Maria’s aunt to our Sunday playing.

I am really please that you are getting to know one another through the Forum. When you all meet up, you will have such a better sense of community. Also, I see that you are helping one another with answers to questions that you have and I love that! Christina

Hi Annie, I have just read your post and yes, I think it would be lovely for everyone who reads this to take a moment while sitting at the harp tonight to play our song in memory of that tragic day. I’m sure we can all remember where we were when we heard the news. So many lives have been affected and this is appropriate to hold all in prayer. Christina

Hello folks, it was so good to hear your voices tonight. I have asked that you’ll take time to listen to the recordings of your classmates for the session that you did not attend. We covered different material and points of interest and announcements were made on both calls. I will have the calls here in the next two days. Cheers, Christina

Hoping you’ll be responding to one another! Don’t forget to tick the little Nitify me of follow-up box.

Here is the Conference call for May 2012 – the last of the year. The lessons now stop and we will keep the May lesson up for a while until we switch the current students over to Finishing students. The review of the May Quiz is at the end of this call and lots of information about what is expected in your portfolio and great questions from the students.

Cynthy Johnson sent me this wonderful email regarding the EOL music that we will be asking of the graduates in the future. She says it so well.

    Hi Tina,

I just finished listening to the Current Student’s Monthly phone call (April) and your suggestion of the “End of Life Song”. I strongly support this new development in IHTP.

The 2 areas that I have worked in the past 7 years have been hospice and those with Alzheimer’s. I was trained in hospice, and worked as a volunteer prior to beginning my study in IHTP in February 2003. There truly is a lot going on at end of life.

However, with regard to playing the harp; I have learned and adjusted my playing over the past 7 years. I have learned to play a tone with just a feather touch of a string. In addition, how to angle my fingers to that the tone is round, and pleasing – even though it is very gentle and soft. I have been able to repeat this on any harp. It is a skill that developed and I have used through many vigils.

It was really tested when I was playing through EOL for Steve’s father, who died 4 years ago, this July 21st (Steve’s birthday). I would sit an play for him each evening. As he progressed through each phased, his resonance changed. Toward the end, his resonance was “F”, so I ended up playing Aeolian (Dm). When the family finished visiting I would softly pluck 2 strings on my lever gut Cygnet … and Bill’s response would be “hmmmm … those are the bells I like to hear” as he drifted off to sleep.

I would be careful to not play during the apneas, so I would not hold him back, and then play a few notes of an improvisation that I made for him, and then wait. It would take about 1/2 hour just to pluck a few notes at a time until I was certain he was resting (although the apneas were present). Then, Steve would quietly move my harp out of the room, and I would leave.

In a sense, over 2 weeks, I created a song for Bill. I truly was an End of Life song, and it belonged to him. However, it was how I plucked the strings; soft and round tones that were also important; as well as knowing when to start and stop.

We all miss Bill very much – Steve especially, as he is reminded each birthday.

This is a wonderful idea to add this to IHTP.
    Bright Blessings,
    Cynthy

    Hello Current Students,
Here is your April 2012 Conference Call. The key message in this is to aim to spend one month on each of the Creative Harping DVDs – then SUBMIT it! It does not have to be perfect! Your mentor will pick up on things that you need to work on and you’ll benefit in all ways of just getting it submitted.

The second part of this conversation talks about a new requirement in the IHTP that when you get ready to graduate, you will submit a PERFECT recording of a piece that you will use for End Of Life (EOL) playing. We will list a selection of appropriate songs soon but this is very important that by the time you Graduate, you have the skills to play for EOL. There will be a panel that decides if you playing is suitable for Hospice/EOL playing and if so, you will receive a designation by your name on the Practitioner Listing.

    Here is the recording: April2012-Current-Student-Call

ROOMING – Here is an announcement to all coming in May for the ESM. In February one of our students stayed down at the Days Inn Hotel for about $59.00/night. It turned out they had a shuttle and brought her up the hill each morning. I’m going to suggest anyone who is under a very tight budget might consider this. It is actually the closest to the Hospice if one did not have to walk up a very steep hill and go around – but with the shuttle it makes it so easy.

This call begins with a few greetings, then we enter the topics on the January Quiz – what to play for the dissolution of elements when a person is in the dying process, and in the grieving process.

Christina outlines the new COLOR MY WORLD HARP program – an extension of the RAINBOW OF SOUND program.

We had a fascinating discussion on Cymatics and Chaos on our Group 2 call today. I will be posting the conference call here in a few hours.
